First settled in the 1830s, Glen Ellyn was initially home to pioneers seeking better lives and land to call their own. The Glen Ellyn Historical Society preserves the town’s past at Stacy’s Tavern, now a museum showcasing exhibits and artifacts. The tavern was built in 1846 as a stagecoach inn. Plaques identify the many other buildings of historical interest in the village.

Present-day Glen Ellyn provides residents and visitors with a wide variety of things to see and do. The town prides itself on supporting local cultural and artistic endeavors. A favorite Glen Ellyn event is the Festival of the Arts, which has taken place each August for more than three decades. The festival showcases artistic exhibits in a wide variety of media, as well as children’s activities and live entertainment. Another favorite community cultural event is the Taste of Glen Ellyn, featuring food from many excellent local restaurants as well as live music and a fair with rides. Year-round entertainment can be found at the Village Theatre Guild, a volunteer-driven dramatic group open to anyone who cares to audition or work behind the scenes. The Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus is known as one of the finest of its kind in the world, while adults interested in singing can join the Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale.

The sports-minded will appreciate the village’s many recreational opportunities. Golfers can hone their skills on the Village Links, providing nine- and 18-hole courses, or at the Glen Oaks Country Club. The Glen Ellyn Park District maintains an extensive network of facilities and offers over 400 recreational programs for children and adults, including softball and soccer teams as well as special holiday events. Speed skating, football and baseball teams are also available to those interested in improving their athletic performance.
